“What can I do after installing WordPress website?” – This is a comment question for the beginners. In this article, I want to present the most important things that you should do after installing WordPress for beginners. So staying with us to this journey.
1. Change the Title, Tagline and Time zone
After login your WordPress admin panel, you should change the “Site Title”, “Tagline” and “Timezone” for your website. To do this, go to Settings>General and change the text for the relevant field.
After change those, don’t forget to save your changes.
2. Add a favicon for your WordPress website
Favicon or Site Icon is the tiny image that appear next to your website title in the browser. It helps your users identify your website and more frequent visitors of your site will build an instant recognition for that tiny image.
Every theme has as option to set or change favicon for your website. For example for the “Twenty Sixteen” theme you can set an image for the favicon for your website is as following,
When active a theme you should find out the theme options to change the favicon for your website.
3. Change Permalink Settings
Unfortunately, the default permalink structure — the URL structure that tacked on the end of your site name — of WordPress is not very Google friendly. As that is the case, you should be sure to alter this to something else.
Go to the “Settings>Permalinks” and you will find a few different choices for setting a new structure. The best ones to use are either the “Day and Name” or “Post Name” radio button option.
Select the one you prefer and then save your changes.
4. Check your login username
In the time to install WordPress site, you should not select the username as “admin”. If you’re using an auto-installer supplied by your hosting company, make sure you don’t have a username of “admin”. It’s becoming more common for hosting companies to automatically set you up with something more cryptic, but double check just to be sure.
Another good idea is to make sure you’re not using your administrator account for non-administrative tasks. If you’re publishing post or pages, create a separate account with author privileges. If you want then you can create an user with “Administrator” role.
5. Configure the Reading Settings
When in your WordPress website, you have some pages and you should determine that what page you want to set “Home Page” and what page you want to show the “Blog Post”. By default WordPress shown the blog post as a home page. But I think, it is not supposed to be a good looking. And you should create a page which you want to “Home Page”.
And now, you should set the “Front page” and “Post page” that you want to display in your website. And you can set it by the “Settings>Reading” and select radio button “A static page” and select the “Front page” and “Post page” by the dropdown menu.
6. Complete your profile
Your profile is also an important to know about active users on your blog. It also helps you in online branding of your website. It creates relationship between you and your visitors so it is very important from you and your visitors.
To change your profile just go to “User>Your Profile” and fill the input field by your information. You should also change your profile picture by the Gravatar. A picture that you will set in your Gravatar profile that will automatically set in here as your profile picture.
7. Select appropriate theme and delete unused themes
After fresh install the WordPress, you will get 3 theme with your fresh WordPress site. You can active a theme within it or choice anyone by uploading theme .zip file by the clicking button “Add New”.
There are thousand free theme has WordPress theme store. To choice a free theme from the WordPress store, just click “Add New Theme” and choice a free theme to use in your website.
You should keep only one theme in your theme panel. And you should delete the unnecessary theme from this panel.
8. Delete unused plugins
After install WordPress, back to your WordPress dashboard and check the plugins by clicking “Plugins>Installed Plugins”. Remove the unused plugins like “Hello Dolly”. “Hello Dolly” is not just a plugin, it symbolizes the hope and enthusiasm of an entire generation summed up in two words sung most famously by Louis Armstrong.
9. Remove default content and comment
When your WordPress installation is completed, I want to say you notice that by default there is a “Hello World” post, “Sample Page” in the page section and an “A WordPress Commenter” in the comment section. This is dummy content and is of no use. Hence, you can remove these page/post/comment before you start adding your content.
10. Check the theme options of active template
After active a WordPress theme, should customize your template by the theme options that is provided by the theme. For example, if you active the “Twenty Sixteen” theme then you will customize the them by the following,
Here, you can change your site identity like Name, tagline and also you can change the color of this theme, Header image, Background image, Menu, Widget and set the front page for your website.
So each theme has a theme option like this. You should customize your theme by those options.
